Gabriella Torres-Ferrer (b.1987 Arecibo, Puerto Rico) is a multimedia artist and researcher. Torres Ferrer’s new media practice considers futurability, new digital epistemologies, and subverts hegemonic narratives; power dynamics and means of exchange in a globalized networked society.
The ongoing series Mine Your Own Business critiques the current digital environment and explore the dynamics of appropriation and commodification of personal data that surrounds our daily life. Found everyday objects are implanted with microcomputers displaying information related to targeted ads.
"The first pieces from the series started as cryptocurrency miners, questioning the post-hurricane utopian/speculative wave of crypto businesses that seem to take advantage of places in crisis. Are these the best places to deploy decentralized technologies? They also stand in defiance of the huge amounts of energy and computational power bitcoin mining requires; using the minimum energy and computational power scattered into found objects." - Torres-Ferrer
Mine Your Own Business (8), 2022, consists of a newly commissioned installation by Torres-Ferrer curated by Isabella Auchenbach for the three person exhibition, Operational Excellence, April 2 – May 29, 2022, at the Hessel Museum of Art, CCS Bard, NY. The sculptural assemblage points to the extractive cryptocurrency mining industry that appeared post-hurricane and the ensuing commodification of the Puerto Rico's crisis.
